Background:
Asia is rich in wetland resources with amazing variety, wide distribution and prominent ecological function which areclosely bound up with human well-being. In recent years, wetland research, education, conservation, and management developed vigorously in Asia. Wetland conservation is becoming an important part of Ecological Civilization. Enlarging the wetland area and the advance of wetland function are incorporated into the 13th Five-year Plan of the Chinese government.Wetland research is taken into consideration for national economy and social development program and integrated to the national macro strategic planning.
The SWS China Chapter was established in 2017. The Northeast Institute of Geography and Agroecology, Chinese Academy of Sciences (IGA-CAS), one of the key founders of the SWS China Chapter, is an important institution of wetland research in Asia and its research history can date back from 1958. The year of 2018 is the IGA 60th anniversary celebration. IGA wish to take this opportunity to exchange advanced ideas and method of wetland study, to improve the research and management of wetland in Asia, to give full play to the ecological function and economic and social benefit of wetlands, thus facilitating the conservation and sustainable utilization of natural resources.
